Compensation varies depending on the merchants way of rewarding its affiliate, compensation could be awarded for every visitor referred to the merchant, every subscriber for the merchant, or every customer who buy the merchants product.

Affiliate Marketing was started by Amazon.com in July 1996 known as the “Amazon Associate Program” where an associate would link to Amazon.com and when the visitor referred to Amazon.com purchase a book the associate will receive commission.

These days Affiliate Marketing has become a very popular way of promoting web businesses. Some merchants have their own affiliate programs and some uses a third party for their Affiliate Marketing. These third parties so know as “Affiliate Network ” contain a massive database of merchants that markets their web business through Affiliate Marketing. Publishers can then sign up for this Affiliate Network and choose which merchant they will want to affiliate with, most of the time the third party will do all the payment process and no payment will be made until there is an action.
